Known for his unapologetic approach to artwork, Keith Maiden is driven by a fervent desire to craft pieces infused with a compelling narrative. A self-taught artist, he forwent attending Art College to support his parents and later rekindled his passion for painting eight years ago. It was during this resurgence that he caught the attention of the art publisher Washington Green, leading to his inclusion in their assembly of contemporary artists in 2013.
Maiden's art delves into the pressing issues of contemporary society, ranging from greed and abuse to politics and, most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic. Employing a predominantly black-and-white palette, Maiden incorporates raw pigments, ink, acrylic, and graphite into his paintings. The strategic use of color becomes a significant element in conveying messages within the narrative of each piece.
His figurative work typically commences with a sketch that evolves into a storyboard, addressing the thematic content of the painting. As the composition takes shape, Maiden meticulously layers each medium, resulting in a final piece that exudes depth, revealing both overt and subtly concealed messages.
While Maiden characterizes his art as storytelling, he frequently intertwines themes from popular culture to offer a striking counterpoint to the gritty subjects he confronts. Examples include references to Star Wars, Sonic the Hedgehog, the Joker, depictions of soldiers and the army, and the Union Jack.
