Jonathan Retallick Joins Blackwater Gallery

Jonathan Retallick is a Welsh artist whose creative labour has resulted in gestural abstraction, with a hyperrealist aesthetic. 

Jonathan has developed a process of stretching and preparing smooth canvases or panels to paint highly detailed and fluid oil paintings. By building up and burnishing back layers of paint he creates a dramatic source of light and simplicity in his work.

After experimenting with various unconventional drawing tools, he has progressively worked with thinned down oil paint, moving it around with brushes, home-made tools, and scrapers. By repeating movements and setting experimental parameters for each series of paintings, his work is gently evolving and exploring an imagined world with a photographic aesthetic.
