Schroeders work often steps across aesthetic genres. With expressionism at the forefront, we also see elements of brutalism weaved throughout his canvases in his use of bold shapes and lines to compose the background architectural narrative for his figurative elements.
A visionary of the neo expressionist movement, Frank Schroeders work is bold and unafraid. His work combines abstract forms and religious imagery with underlying narratives that convey experiences from his own turbulent past.

As part of this fantastic exhibition, Blackwater Gallery will also be displaying a stunning selection of bronze sculptures by Craig Hudson.
FRANK SCHROEDER
Born to a French mother and a West African father, Schroeder gained a unique ethnicity spanning continents and divergent cultures.
His family moved to the Ivory Coast where he suffered through the First Ivorian Civil War. In 2004, his gallery in the Ivory Coast was ransacked in the aftermath of the revolt and all his pieces were destroyed. He found solace studying the philosophy, literature and artwork of the 19th and 20th centuries. He retreated to an inner creative world he describes as “dark and sometimes near death.”
CRAIG HUDSON
Hudson’s work, like the artist, is quiet and yet cool, immersed in popular culture references that are instantly engaging. Hudson was a skater, loved and still loves Star Wars, the emblems of his passions adorn his studio and creep into his work.
He often visualises the complexities of human nature, interactions, and cultural narratives in a contemporary context. Drawing on themes derived from comics, film, and street culture. His sculptires constantly challenge and play with the contrast of both the medium and the narrative. The cold cast bronze juxtaposed with the impassioned subject matter make for a powerful and considered response to visualising the issues prevalent in todays society.
